Fabric weight is one useful specification, but it cannot select a team uniform on its own. The same GSM can describe fabrics with very different stretch, airflow, opacity, texture and snag resistance. Choose the material by sport, garment construction and wearing conditions, then approve the actual swatch and sample.
What GSM tells you
GSM means grams per square meter. It allows a consistent mass comparison between materials. A higher number generally indicates more material per area, but it does not explain the fiber, yarn, knit, stretch, finish or quality. It also does not state the finished garment weight because panels, trims, lining, decoration and size all contribute.

Begin with the sport and garment
A basketball jersey may prioritize ventilation, low bulk and freedom around the armholes. Basketball shorts may need a more opaque body and a stable waistband. A hockey jersey needs room over equipment and may use different panel constructions. Baseball pants need stretch, opacity and reinforcement that a baseball top does not. Netball dresses must be checked for coverage and recovery under movement.
For this reason, one team kit may use several fabrics. Matching color and artwork does not require every garment to use the same material.
Use weight ranges as a sampling direction
A useful brief can state a preferred weight range, but it should also describe the intended feel and performance. Instead of requesting only “160 GSM,” ask for a lightweight, opaque performance knit with suitable sublimation response and the required stretch. The supplier can then propose comparable swatches and explain their differences.
Exact weight ranges vary by knit, supplier and product. Treat any website chart as a starting point for samples, not a universal rule that guarantees performance.
Lightweight, midweight and heavier directions
Lightweight direction
Useful when low bulk and ventilation are priorities. Check opacity, cling, snag behavior and whether decoration or seams distort the fabric.
Midweight direction
Often balances coverage, structure and comfort for general teamwear. Knit construction still determines how it stretches and breathes.
Heavier direction
May provide more structure or coverage, but can hold more heat and restrict movement. Higher GSM alone does not guarantee abrasion resistance.
How color and sublimation affect the decision
Dye sublimation requires compatible material and changes how the final fabric looks. The same artwork can appear different on two polyester knits because of surface texture, whiteness, finish and heat response. Dark artwork can improve visual coverage, while light areas may reveal transparency more readily. Approve important colors on the selected material rather than only on a monitor.
Check the finished garment, not only the roll
- Compare swatches. Review hand feel, stretch, opacity, texture and print response.
- Confirm the panel map. Decide whether mesh, stretch or reinforcement panels are needed.
- Make the sample. Use the intended seams, trims and decoration.
- Test fit and movement. Assess coverage, heat, range of motion and recovery.
- Record the approved material. Keep the supplier code, specification and physical reference for production.

A flat swatch can hide transparency, cling, heat and distortion that appear during play. Contact sports also need attention to snag and abrasion exposure from equipment or opponents.
Keep a usable material record
Record supplier code, composition, knit construction, nominal GSM, color, finish, print result and the approved physical swatch. If a later order needs a substitute, compare it with that record and repeat critical tests. A photograph or generic name such as “mesh polyester” is not enough to reproduce the material reliably.
